ABOUT THE BEACH | Wainui Beach is recognised as one of New Zealand's iconic vacation beaches. There are no highrise apartments or obvious tourism accoutrements here. Just a 3km curve of golden, sandy beach between two rugged coastal headlands where the clear blue Pacific Ocean laps the shores, often producing world-class surfing waves. At its southern-most end is Tuahine Point, allowing an adventurous walk to the derelict lighthouse at its tip. At the centre of the bay is Okitu and the "Pines" surfing location overlooked by the Wainui Surf Life Saving Club during summer. North from the "Pines" the foreshore is a beach reserve of sand dunes and pohutukawa trees all the way to Makorori-Wainui headland where there is an exciting walkway over to neighbouring Makorori Beach. All adventurous and leisurely seaside activities are possible at Wainui Beach. Surfing, swimming, kite surfing, surfcasting, sailing, windsurfing are all popular sports while the sandy beach itself is ideal for either fitness walking or just a leisurely stroll. The Tsunami Bar and Brasserie offers excellent cuisine. Amor Bendall Winery has excellent locally produced wines. And most mornings you are treated to sunrises that are simply first-in-the-world class!
